Synopsis
In 1916, Captain Fred Roberts stumbled upon a printing press amidst the ruins of Ypres, Belgium. Seizing the opportunity, he launched a satirical magazine titled The Wipers Times—“Wipers” being the soldiers’ slang for Ypres. Brimming with dark humor, The Wipers Times combined poignancy with sharp wit, offering a unique perspective on the horrors of war.
Produced under the constant threat of enemy fire and gas attacks, the magazine quickly resonated with troops on the Western Front, becoming a cherished outlet for their experiences. Its irreverent take on the war not only provided laughter but also served as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in dire circumstances.
In addition to his editorial endeavors, Roberts distinguished himself on the battlefield, earning the Military Cross for gallantry during his service. The Wipers Times stands as a remarkable example of how humor can thrive even in the bleakest of times.
